Black Rice with Chicken breast


In my last trip to Beijing as always, I walked into one of the local giant supermarket and almost got lost. There were so many types of rice and I didn’t know what to choose, until I saw the black rice which I never saw before. So I bought it and asked one of the locals about the rice and this is what he told me.

Black Rice: “The Emporor’s Rice”, “Forbidden Rice”  Why? Where is the rice coming from? why is it so special and healthy?. During the days of the Ching and Ming dynasties forbidden rice was reserved exclusively for the emperors to ensure their longevity and health.

I am cooking black rice with Chinese 5 spices and top with chicken breast, mushrooms and pine nuts.


1/2 cup of black rice

About 2 cups of water

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tsp. of Chinese 5 spices

1 tsp. of oil

Cook the rice- it takes a little longer, more water need to be added

100 grams of sliced chicken breast

1 tsp. Soy sauce, chili sauce

Drop of sesame seeds

1 tsp. chopped of mint

1 garlic clove chopped

1 tsp. of olive oil

Marinate the chicken breast

Fry until golden brown

1 small carrot sliced

4-6 strips of celery

2 small Champignon  mushrooms

1 tsp. of oil

Fry the vegetables until soft

Mix stir fry vegetables with the chicken breast

Top the black rice with the mix
